Cemeteries offer a lasting sanctuary for commemorating communities of individuals who have passed away and now rest within their gates. But as generations pass and the memories of these loved ones fade and eventually disappear, there is a risk that the stories and sacrifices of those interred may slip away and be forgotten. The history of those permanently resting at Mount Hebron Cemetery is not just a story of individuals, it is a story of people who persevered to help create our city and in turn, our country. We want these stories to come alive so that the legacy of these individuals and their cultural history will be available for generations of today into the future.
The objective of The Legacy Foundation is to find detailed, thoughtful and meaningful stories about the Jewish people who rest with us as well as the fraternal societies they belonged to. We research them – including our veterans, Holocaust survivors, notable individuals, societies, clergy, monumentation and our personal family legacies to educate the community through programming and content.

ENGAGING THE COMMUNITY
Each year, we welcome the public to enjoy Mount Hebron's signature events, which bring stories to life in amazing ways. These events are free of charge and offer a great opportunity for the community to learn more about the amazing history behind our gates.
ARTS & CULTURE
As The Legacy Foundation embraces its expanded role as a cultural institution, we seek ways to engage our visitors through the arts. We have thematic self-guided audio tours of famous musicians and actors as well as artists. We have an annual Yiddish Theatrical Ceremony open to the public.
VETERANS
Identifying veterans buried at Mount Hebron Cemetery is central to our work at the Foundation. We have identified almost 1900 Vets and we know there are more. Our work continues...
Twice a year, on Memorial Day and Veterans Day, we flag graves and recognize the contributions of those Jewish people who served and those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the United States. This program collaborates with John Bowne High School's R.O.T.C. to make sure that all who served know how grateful we are for their service.
INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
The Legacy Foundation presents local college students with an opportunity to put their studies into practice. We work with local colleges to procure students who are interested in studying the history of the Cemetery and those resting within its' gates. They are paid and receive college credit for their work.
THE VISITOR EXPERIENCE
Mount Hebron Cemetery is open every day except Saturday and always free to the public. Visitors may use our website to access tours and the locations of those they wish to visit. We are committed to making Mount Hebron a welcoming, engaging, and accessible place for all people.
PRESERVING HISTORY
The archives at Mount Hebron Cemetery encompass a vast collection of institutional records, holding a wealth of historical data about the residents of New York City. Preserving this valuable data is an important part of The Legacy Project so it's available for generations to come.
EXPLORE MORE OF MOUNT HEBRON'S LEGACY
Remembering those permanently resting at Mount Hebron Cemetery enables us to unearth important stories of those that came before us. They are not just stories of individuals, but a story of people who persevered to help create Queens, New York City and in turn, our country. We want these stories to come alive so that the legacy of these individuals and their cultural history will be available for generations to come. The story of the Jewish people is embedded here and we want to research, educate and make available these meaningful stories to public.
